In the 1920's and 30's, Grosse Pointers whose names we still recognize, such as the Alger's, Newberry's, Joy's, and Gar Wood had an association with the Packard Motor Car Company. In 1932, the world turned it's attention to the power boat race along the shoreline of Lake St. Clair. 60,000 people watched as the championship motorboat builder, Gar Wood, raced his Miss America X, breaking the world speed record. The boat featured four formidable V12 Packard engines and beat the British competition.
Miss America X is still on display at the Packard Proving Grounds Museum in Shelby Twp.
