Donald Nelson and the Arsenal of Democracy
“…he had the appearance of the arch-typical Midwestern Rotarian, big, jovial, bland and decidedly well nourished.” This is how historian Kenneth Davis describes Donald Nelson, head of the War Production Board during World War II. A figure lost amongst the battles, generals and armies of popular history, Nelson was a household name, and potentially one of the most powerful men in America in 1942. Was Donald Nelson deserving of his role, and did he wield the power entrusted to him by President Roosevelt wisely and to the benefit of the nation, or was he just another cog in an ineffective political machine?
Come join Director Chris Causley and his wife, Wendy, of the Eastpointe Michigan Military Technical & Historical Society as they return to discuss this important yet controversial figure.
